The federal government shut down my bank, Netbank, a few months ago, and ING Direct subsequently bought out Netbank.
I just got an email signed by the FDIC saying that I should not be writing any more paper checks from my Netbank account. However, out of the goodness of their heart, ING (I’m not sure why the FDIC was writing the email for ING, since ING now bought the bank– I guess the government just can’t ever give up control of anything, right?) would honor any paper checks I write until March 2008.
I’m glad that the federal government has nothing better to do than tell people whether they can write paper checks or not. There are no other important matters in the world or anything. And of course, the government still can’t get anything right– I long since closed my Netbank account, as most people did when the government shut it down.
PS. I just came across this: A workshop on smart online shopping, conducted by Ebay, PayPal, and…. the Federal Trade Commission. Because people love to be told what to do by Mommy Government, the comments from consumers include such platitudes as “It is great to see a proactive FTC” and “good to see a representative from the FTC here.”
Your taxpayer dollars hard at work, guys! Why ever let a billion-dollar company conduct a workshop on its own when the government can muscle in and subsidize them with your money?
